This is a massive game design change to World of Warcraft, which up until now has split its player base in half in all situations. This split has led to faction balance issues at times, where one faction might struggle to get through a queue, while the other is forced to wait extended times to find games.

Different races in WoW have different racial abilities, so opening up cross-faction queues for premade parties will allow for racial abilities to be combined in previously impossible ways. So probably a lot of Horde players who want to play Alliance, but chose not to anymore because of the endgame content, could switch to Alliance, which I mean could be good for the horde too, better faction balance means better world PvP."

Players can choose to reach across the divide to join a party with their sworn enemy, but you will not have to if you don't want to. This will only apply to premade parties for dungeons, raids, and rated PvP instances, while in-world PvP will remain unchanged. Guilds will also remain single-faction, and random matchmade activities like Heroic Dungeons or Skirmishes will also remain split by faction.

"There are likely those who have read this far with some unease, worried that this is chipping away at a foundational principle of Warcraft," The developers stated in the announcement post. "At BlizzCon in 2019, when an attendee asked about cross-faction play, we responded at the time that 'Alliance and Horde separation … is a pillar of what makes Warcraft, Warcraft.' But upon reflection, that’s an oversimplification: Alliance and Horde identity is what is fundamental to Warcraft."

They continued: "We’re hopeful that these changes will serve to actually strengthen faction identity by allowing more players to play the faction whose values, aesthetic, and characters they find more compelling, rather than feeling forced to choose between their personal preference and the ability to play with friends."

Yesterday’s World of Warcraft reveal stream was kind of a big deal, announcing the next expansion for the retail game in the form of Dragonflight as well as the next expansion for the Classic side of the game with Wrath of the Lich King. Earlier this month, Wowhead found strings in the public source code of the World of Warcraft website for an unannounced product called Dragonflight. In other words, fans were already all but certain about the name of the expansion. But now they have the logo as well:

A Reddit post about the leaks did a great job summarizing the information. First, Dragonflight will introduce the next playable race called the dracthyr. These will presumably be humanoid dragons, fitting the theme of the expansion. They will be neutral to begin with, similar to the pandaren that debuted in 2012’s Mists of Pandaria expansion pack. There will also be a new playable class called Evoker, which will cast Arcane spells.

Additionally, the leaks suggest that World of Warcraft will bring back the original talent trees. There will only be two columns in the trees this time instead of three. Finally, Scaleface says Blizzard will release World of Warcraft: Dragonflight in November 2022.

Beyond the expansion, the leaker also claims that Wrath of the Lich King Classic will launch in September. Blizzard has been slowly rolling out expansions for World of Warcraft Classic since its arrival in 2019. The Burning Crusade expansion made its way to WoW Classic last June, and more than a year later, another expansion is supposedly on its way.

Dragonflight continues a story which started 10,000 years ago in the Dragon Isles, which is split into five zones and four leveling zones, plus a special starting zone unique to the new Dracthyr race. After King Varian Wrynn vanished mysteriously, his son Anduin Wrynn was given the crown and Highlord Bolvar Fordragon was promoted to Regent of Stormwind, or Supreme Commander of Stormwind's forces. During this time, Bolvar commanded the troops to various locations and was warned about a possible alliance between Blackrock orcs and the Black dragonflight, the warning came from Magistrate Solomon in the Redridge Mountains. Bolvar tasked Alliance players with contacting Lady Prestor, an expert on dragons and dragonkin. Lady Prestor did not believe anything that Magistrate Solomon claimed and told Bolvar to avoid sending troops that way, instead Bolvar sent Alliance players to investigate the claims and help Solomon.

Lady Jaina Proudmoore came to Bolvar with information regarding King Varian's disappearance and Bolvar quickly acted. The Defias Brotherhood was involved, and apparently, they had a powerful ally in Stormwind. Lady Prestor tried to claim that the Brotherhood's involvement was pure speculation and that Bolvar should not pursue them. He became aware of Lady Prestor's treachery but unwillingly became a pawn of the black dragon Onyxia after Lady Prestor gifted him the Drakefire Amulet. He was able to break free and Lady Prestor was revealed to be Onyxia the entire time, being beheaded upon King Varian's return.
King Varian returned and took his place on the Stormwind throne, but then the Scourge attacked. Bolvar quickly jumped into action and helped defend Stormwind from the undead invasion. He then led the armies of the Alliance to the continent of Northrend where he aided Alliance players in defeating the lich, Thel'zan the Duskbringer. Bolvar's army laid siege to the Wrathgate, the rear entrance of Icecrown Citadel, and with Dranonsh Saurfang, commander of the Horde's Kor'kron Vanguard, he confronted the Lich King.

Saurfang lost his life to Frostmourne and Bolvar watched as a plague explosion ripped through the Alliance and Horde forces. Grand Apothecary Putress, apothecary of the Forsaken, appeared and attacked the Alliance, Horde, and the Scourge with catapults. Bolvar ordered a retreat but was brought down by the gas that Putress threw. At the last minute Alexstrasza, the leader of the red dragonflight, appeared and breathed cleansing flames, destroying the poison and burning away the plagued flesh from the bodies. Bolvar's shield was recovered from the battlefield and returned to King Varian. King Varian used this as an example of the Horde's treachery, and he marched the Alliance forces on Lordaeron in an attempt to purge the Horde from the city.
